MATILDA

Roald Dahl was born in 1 9 1 6 in Wales , to Norwegian parents. He was named after a polar explorer, Roald Amundsen.

When his father died, his mother decided to live in the United Kingdom , because her husband wanted to have their children educated in British schools, as he thought they were the best in the world.

He was sent to several boarding schools, which was an unpleasant experience for him. He was very homesick and wrote to his mother almost every day.

Throughout his childhood and adolescent years he spent his summer holidays in his parents' native Norway . His childhood is the subject of his autobiographical work, Boy.

In July 1 934 he joined the Shell Petroleum Company. In November 1 939, that he joined the Royal Air Force. This is what he began writing.

After the War, in 1 942, he was transferred to Washington as Assistant Air Attaché. This is what he began writing.

His first children's book was The Gremlins, about mischievous little creatures that were part of RAF folklore, published in 1 942. Dahl went on to create some of the best-loved children's stories of the 20th century, such as Charlie and the Chocolate factory, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach.

Many of his children's books are illustrated by Quentin Blake .

Dahl's works for children are usually told from the point of view of a child, typically involve adults who hate and mistreat children, and at least one "good" adult.

He also had a successful parallel career as the writer of macabre adult short stories, usually with a dark sense of humour and a surprise ending.

Roald Dahl died in 1 990 at his home in Buckinghamshire. According to his granddaughter, the family gave him a "sort of Viking funeral. He was buried with his snooker cues, some very good burgundy, chocolates, HB pencils and a power saw."

This is the story of a little girl, Matilda, who can read and write even before she is 5 years old. She loves reading, and she has found out she can go to the town library, and there she has read all Dickens, Hemingway, Kipling and Steinbeck.

Her parents don't look after her, they'd rather watch TV than read! Her father sells cars but he is a crook. Her mother plays bongo all the time. She has a little brother, who is really bad.

Anyway, when Matilda finally goes to school, she is so clever that her teacher Miss Candy, wants her to go to a class for older pupils. But the Headmaster, the terrible Miss Legourdin does not accept.

Miss Legourdin is a terrifying monster who physically bullies the children she does not like. She thinks teaching is mainly a matter of physical and verbal power on children. She dreams of a school without children.

One day Matilda finds out she has magic powers ... She tells her teacher about it, and Miss Candy takes her to her place to talk about it.

There Matilda finds out Miss Candy is very poor, and Miss Candy tells her all about her life after her father's mysterious death, with her aunt, who happens to be Miss Legourdin.

So Matilda thinks of a plan to get rid of Miss Legourdin!

Read the book and you will know all about Matilda's magical powers, what happened after Miss Candy's father's death, and how Matilda manages to get rid of Miss Legourdin, and to live happily ever after with her beloved Miss Candy!

This wonderful book was adapted into a film in 1 996! Although it is a bit different from the book, it is worth watching!

Comments on the book

Megan:

I like the character Matilda a lot, because she is very bright : she can read at the age of 4. She is very courageous .

Her parents are really evil and they don't like Matilda. They don't cheer her when they see her read and they say it is useless. They have bad living habits. His father tampers with cars and then he sells them. Her mother play bingo every afternoon.Mrs Legourdin is very cruel with her pupils. She is big and not intelligent ! Miss Candy is very nice with the pupils, particularly with Matilda.

 Sarah:

I like the story because I love books and I like school and I like what Matilda writes. Matilda is intelligent and very bright. She is very little because she is only four.

Julia:

I love this book because it is funny and serious at the same time. My favourite passage is the one where lays glue on top of her father's hat. I also love the passage where Miss Legourdin gives Julien a giant chocolate cake to eat. I like many passages. It's a fantastic book. I advise this book for children and grown ups who like fantastic books.

This is the letter that Matilda mentally writes, for Miss Legourdin to be frightened, because she is really bad with Jenny (Miss Candy) and she took Jenny's house. Have you noticed? It is not in English : Matilda is so popular that it has been translated in many languages! Can you find it in your language? Tell us! You can send us a message about that!

This is Matilda. She ' s got brown hair and a blue dress. On this photo, Matilda is kept apart in class to read a book because she is too good compared to the other pupils.
