OUR MUTUAL FRIEND

This story is about a young man called John Harmon, whose father, a rich man, died. John Harmon was abroad at that moment and he was announced that he might get his father's fortune only if he married a young girl, called Bella.

Returning in London, John Harmon decided to disguise himself in order to discover more about Bella. A young man, believed to be John Harmon is founf dead. In this situation, John Harmon'f ather's lawyer decided that the heritage must be given to a close friend of Harmon's father, Mr. Boffin. Under the name of John Rokesmith, John Harmon became Mr. Boffin's secretary and at the same time lived as a lodger in Mr. Wilfer's house, Bella's father.

Bella Wilfer lived in the Boffins' house where she often saw Mr. Rokesmith. They love each other, since the minute they met for the first time. Mr. Boffin believed that his secretary wished to marry Bella for money and fired John Rokesmith. The two young people married in secret. They lived together more than a year and had a baby. Some persons, knowing about the death of false John Harmon, were involved in unpleasant events. Their stories are very interesting.

Finally, is the moment for John Rokesnith to reveal his identity, as John Harmon. All are happy when they became indeed wealthy. (Raluca)
 

The author wrote about his life with the help of book characters. I think that Charles Dickens tried to show us that the power of love is stronger than the power of money. He compared two beautiful, but poor women, one who was attracted to money, the other one who was poor,but dindn't feel attracted to money.

Bella Wilfer was a woman who was poor and she worked for the Boffins. One of the rich men , John Harmon, loved her, but she wasn't sure that she would love him whether he was rich or poor. He went to work at Mr. Boffin, pretending that he was John Rokesmith.

Mr. Rokesmith asked Miss. Wilfer if she would like to marry him. She refused him, and I think she did so because the Boffins advised her to marry a rich man.

The other woman, Lizzie Hexam, was poor and she had a brother, named Charley . Her brother didn't love Lizzie very much, but she cared about him a lot, and she wanted him to go to school in order to make his future. So, Charley went to school. One day, his schoolmaster, Bradley, wanted to go to Charley's sister, and he fell in love with her. But there was another man who really loved Lizzie, Eugene Wrayburn; he made the first step and Lizzie married him. The schoolmaster wanted to kill Mr. Wrayburn, but he couldn't.

The story has a happy end. (Ioana T.)

My opinion about this book is that it's a good one, because it was full of action and tragedy. I admire Charles Dickens and I consider that he is a great writer. In the first part there was a moment of tragedy which impressed me. The characters had interesting names. Another good moment was when Mrs. Boffin talked with her husband, Mr. Boffin and told him that as they had no children, she decided to take Bella as their child and take care her future.

I liked the story „ Our Mutual Friend” by Charles Dickens as this book is about love, about how people can change in bad, and from bad in good.

For example, at the beginning Bella was a girl who thought only about money and wasn't interested in anything else, except it. But when she got in love with Mr. Rokesmith, she forgot about money and ran away with her belobed, she came back to her true family, and she wasn't interested in the Boffins' money. She married John and they were happy, and that was enough for her. Mr. Boffin did a lot of good to Bella and he opened her eyes makinf her see the things that are more important than money.

Lizzie didn't think about money, like Bella did, but she had a problem with her brother who wanted her to marry a rich man, because in that way he could be rich, but he didn't care about Lizzie's feelings and happiness. Lizzie loved a poor young man, like her, but she hid had to hide from him, because if she had met him, he would be dead. She loved Wrayburn so much, that she could give her life for him. Although the rich man who loved Lizzie did many things to separate them, he couldn't, because their love was stronger.

I enjoyed the book very much and I hope I will read other stories by Charles Dickens. (Ioana C.)

   

I thought , at the beginning, that this book was just a completely failure because it was hard to keep up with all the ideas. At some point in the story I even mistook Bella with Lizzie! But after I finished it and thinking about it, I realised that this book is trully interesting and the reason I was confused while I was reading is just because there are too many ideas in way too few pages.

Anyway, the plot of the book is really interesting because it's about human feelings. And I believe that iven if human feelings are hard to understand, it's one of the most interesting subjects I've read about. It's about love, jealousy, greed, kindness and sometimes even madness.

I think this book's message is „ Try to control your feelings!”, I mean, Mr. Headstone couldn't , and ends up dead because of it. And also, the message may be „ Feelings aren't always enough”; and again the example of mr. Headstone.

But I don't believe that the author wanted to show us that money isn't everything in life, because it's something that we all know even if sometimes we ignore it.

So, all in all, I liked this book pretty much. (Ana)

 

I want to tell you that this story might be one of my favourites. In this story it's about fight, about love, about money, and about how a person can change because of money.

I was really surprised when I read in this book about Bella. I can say that she was a wonderful character, but when she fell in love with John Rokesmith, her beauty grew up, I was happy indeed when she married John, and they had a child.

Also, it's very important to say how much Charley Master loved Lizzie. Because he was gelous, he wanted to kill Mr. Wrayburn. But eventually, he discovered that no matter what he did to separate them, he helped them love each other. Seeing that nobody could separate them, Master Killed himself. That was a very good proof of love.

Sitting in my chair and thinking about this story, I realised that money isn't important. We cannot live without it, but also we cannot live without love. So, love is more important than money, and in this story the power of love destroys the power of money. And I'm very glad of this! (Madalina)

Our mutual friend

Jess Hexam’s job was to take drowned people from the river. He realized that it was a good business because when he went to the police station and he declared the deads he got some money. So, one day because it was a long time since he hadn’t found a drowned in the river, he thought that the only way to get money from the police was to kill the people and to declare that he found them drowned. His daughter didn’t know about her father’s plan. Never mind, she had always hate the river. So, Hexam killed a man every month and drowned him into the river. The police thought that all this became a little bit mysterious. Because of this, Hexam said to himself:

“I must do something to show them that I’m not a murderer!”

And he got an idea: to kill his son, Charlie. In this way, nobody would think that he could kill his own son; nobody thought that he could be so cruel! And that’s what he did. After he killed his son, he went to the police station and he said:

“I’ve never taught that I could found my own son drowned in the river! Now, I hate this cursed river!”

What a liar! He did all this only for money, only for himself! He was so cruel that he killed his own son! Unfortunately, the policeman believed him this time! After this murder, Hexam continued with more and more murders, and he was proud of all what he did!

One day, Bella, a beautiful lady who was married to man who was for her just a stranger and they didn’t love each other, came to the river and saw Hexam drawing a man in the water. She was really curious and she stayed hidden to see what was happening. She made a little noise and Hexam heard her! In that moment he saw her. Bella became scared and Hexam too, because he was discovered, but he got an idea, he told Bella that she could be his associate and they could share the money. I forgot to tell you that Bella was fond of money, so she accepted all this. Her husband found out about Hexam and Bella’s plan and he didn’t want to denounce them to the police because even if he didn’t love Bella, she was his wife. So, he decided to saw what would Bella do next, and if she proved that she was a really bad woman, he would denounce her to the police.

One day, Hexam told Bella:

“I want your parents to be my next murder!”

“No, no way, you’ll never kill them, I don’t let you!”

“But this is our business, you must respect it!”

“You don’t tell me that you’ll kill my parents!”

“Oh no, sorry I forgot, but I told you that I’ll kill lots of people from this little town, in the future we’ll be the only survivors!”

“But in this town there are persons that I love!”

“Business is business, dear! And to prove you this I’ll kill my own daughter first and next your dear parents, Mr. and Ms. Boffin!

“You can kill your daughter, if you can be so cruel, I don’t care, but you’ll never kill my parents! I’ll denounce you to the police immediately!”

“Will you? I don’t think so, because I’ll kill you right now!”

“No, you’ll not! Said John Harmon, Bella’s husband. I wait for you dear; I wait for you to prove me that you are not like him! I wait for you to show me that in your soul you still have a piece of love, even if money blinds you!”

In that moment the police came and arrested Jess Harmon. Bella could be arrest too, but it wasn’t, because finally she proved that she was a good person!

Finally, Bella became a good woman and she learned what love is!
