Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (October 16, 1854 – November 30, 1900) was born into a Protestant Anglo-Irish family.

Jane Francesca Elgee, his mother, was a successful writer and an Irish nationalist, also known as “Speranza”, while Sir William was Ireland’s leading ear and eye surgeon. He also wrote books on archaeology and folklore.

As the time passed Oscar grew and became familiar with philosophies, aesthetics and literature. As an aesthete, the eccentric young Wilde wore long hair and velvet knee breeches. His rooms were filled with various objets d'art such as sunflowers, peacock feathers, and blue china; Wilde claimed to aspire to the perfection of the china.

Oscar Wilde excelled in classics and became a well known play writer, novelist, poet and short stories writer.

One of his writing is “The Canterville Ghost”, a short story teaching us about friendship and respect of human feelings. As Virginia started to understand the feelings of the ghost she tried to help it.

The story also tells us about the differences between American and British culture: even though they speak the same language, they are two different civilizations. In this story Oscar Wilde describes the Americans as very wealthy, but insensitive  people, believing that if they have money, they have also power and culture, while the British are diligent people. Due to their hard work they have many castles and monuments.

In the story “The Canterville Ghost” Oscar Wilde shows the differences between people and tries to give us a lesson to be more understanding and carying with others and not to be bossy.

Love, stronger than life?

During my holiday I have read many books and noticed that in all of them there was a message about love and hate; life and death and even peace and war.

Those messages were put in different words but, somehow they meant the same thing : LOVE is the most powerful force in the galaxy!

This is the idea on which Oscar Wilde based “The Canterville Ghost”. Let me ilustrate it:

Sir Dimon was a bad man who lived in  Canterville Chase. He killed his wife and made other cruel things which we don’t know about, and maybe that is why he couldn’t pass in the afterlife when he died. He was doomed to haunt the house in which he lived until he met the American family. They moved to  Canterville Chase and they seemed not to be afraid of ghosts, on the contrary, they were a menace to the phantom. One day the ghost was very sad. Virginia, the little girl of the family, saw him, but unlike the rest of her family that used to play tricks on him,she felt pity for him,and wanted to help him.So the phantom accepted the company of that kind girl who finally helped him find peace.

Despite the spooky, mysterious and also funny atmosphere of the story,it actually sends the powerful message mentioned by one of the main characters at the very end of the story: ”Poor Simon! I owe him a great deal.Yes,don’t laugh Cecil, I really do.He made me see what Life is,and what Death signifies and why LOVE is stronger than both!

Love and mystery

We all know that each story has its happy or bad ending. I read lots of stories but those that I liked most were ghost stories. One of them is “The Canterville Ghost” written by Oscar Wilde. It has a special ending and I’m going to tell you some more things about it.

It begins with an American family who wants to buy a house,a haunted house in England. As they move there they see bloodstains on the floor although they remove them every day. They also see a ghost who tries to scare them. One day, the Canterville ghost makes his appearance in Virginia’s room, the girl of the family, and a long conversation starts about how his life was and is and what he is going to do.Finally Virginia opens the death’s garden and helps the ghost  enter it to find his peace that was the most important thing for him.

Do you ask yourself how she could do that? The answer is quite simple:she was the only one who wanted to talk to the ghost and holding a cup of love, a spoon of mystery and a little humour she finally saved him.

You see, all of us have something special and it is important to be beautiful inside more than outside. Virginia’s character showed us that the impossible can turn into possible.

I think this kind of ending makes a story interesting indeed.
